What are Certified Translations in Italy?

In Italy, certified translations are court-certified and sworn before an Italian court. This is the only way to ensure compliance with Italian law.

A close-up of a translator's hand signing the sworn statement for a certified translation before a court official in Florence Italy.

What is Required in Italy?

A sworn court-certified translation for Italy is a bound collection of documents with tax payments in the form of attached revenue stamps consisting of:

1️⃣ the Original document (e.g., birth certificate, marriage certificate, diploma, medical or legal record). Italian courts only accept original documents.

2️⃣ Apostille. U.S. documents must be apostilled by the issuing authority in the United States before they can be sworn in Italy. An apostille guarantees that the document is lawful internationally. Apostilles bear the date of issue, but do not have an expiry date.

3️⃣ Italian Translation. Sword court-certified translations are carried out by professional legal translators who faithfully mirror the formatting of the original document, including stamps, seals, and handwritten notes.

4️⃣ Sworn Court-Certification. This sworn statement certifies the accuracy of the translation. It is signed by the translator and sworn before an Italian court official, who seals it.

An Italian court official is signing and sealing an English to Italian sworn translation in Tuscany, Italy.

When do you need it?

Sworn, court-certified translations are required for Italian immigration services, such as for visa applications and residency permits, as well as for other Italian government bodies, academic purposes (e.g., academic transcripts and diplomas), and legal matters (e.g., official documents, such as birth or marriage certificates, adoption papers, tax returns, real estate transactions, and business agreements).

We swear to the accuracy and completeness of every translation before the Court of Florence. These court-certified translations are officially accepted by Italian consulates worldwide, Italian universities and academic institutions, public offices, and businesses throughout Italy.

🇺🇸 Italian to English certified translations for U.S. authorities

If you need your Italian documents translated for USCIS, a university, or another U.S. agency, we will ensure that they meet all the necessary American requirements for accuracy and official acceptance.

What is required in the U.S.?

1️⃣ The Italian record (birth certificates, degrees, transcripts, etc.). U.S. institutions generally do not require physical originals. High-quality digital copies (PDF or JPEG) are usually acceptable. However, requirements vary, so we recommend asking the specific institution whether a digital copy is acceptable or if the original document is required.

2️⃣ The English translation. The translation must be an accurate and complete word-for-word rendition of the original document. Our certified English translations preserve the layout and details of the original Italian document, including seals, stamps, signatures, and handwritten notes.

A high school diploma from the Italian Ministry of Education to be translated into English, along with the relevant transcripts for a year abroad in the U.S.

3️⃣ The Certificate of Accuracy. Certified translations for the U.S. must include a certificate of accuracy. It is required by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and by most academic institutions. This certificate is an affidavit that includes the translator’s signature, full name, address, date, and a statement attesting to his or her competence in translating from the foreign language into English. In the U.S., notarization isn't usually required unless it is specifically requested.

When do you need it?

A certified translation is required for submissions to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), for other government bodies, academic institutions (for transcripts and diplomas), and for legal matters (for official documents, such as birth or marriage certificates, and business agreements).

Hello, I’m Elena Nissen Villoresi, founder of Italy-America Certified Language Services.

I was born to an American mother and an Italian father and raised in both the US and Italy, giving me a deep connection to both countries. This bilingual, bicultural upbringing shaped not only who I am, but is also the foundation of my work today. I bring more than just fluency in two languages, I understand the mindset, systems, and everyday challenges on both sides of the Atlantic. My work is grounded in accuracy, empathy and cultural understanding.

25+ years of cross-cultural expertise

I began my professional journey in New York City, working as an interpreter, translator, and administrative professional at the Italian Chamber of Commerce, Cassa di Risparmio, and the Italian Trade Commission. After moving to Florence, I joined the American multinational company Richardson Electronics as bilingual executive assistant to the European CEO where I further specialized in corporate legal translation and cross-cultural communication.

Over the years, I have specialized not only in certified legal translations, but also as a bilingual liaison and cultural bridge for clients navigating life between Italy and the US. Having crossed borders and adapted to new systems myself, I know firsthand what this means.

You need the original documents plus apostille for U.S. documents intended for Italy. You only need the original documents for documents intended for the U.S.

Do you assist with renewing residence permits?

Yes, we provide ongoing support for renewals and related bureaucratic processes.

Can you help with language coaching tailored to my level?

Absolutely. We offer personalized coaching from beginner to advanced levels, focusing on what you would like to work on more.

What support do you provide after I arrive in Italy?

We assist with bureaucracy, healthcare registration, bank accounts, SIM cards, daily life logistics as well as Italian language and cultural coaching.

Are your services confidential?

Yes, we maintain strict confidentiality and data security throughout our work.

How can I send you my documents for translation?

If you need a simple or certified translation, you can send us scans of your documents to [email protected]. If you need a sworn court-certified translation, please send us scans of the documents to receive a quote, and then send hard copies of your documents to our office as the court only accepts original ones. We recommend using a tracked international courier such as UPS, DHL, or FedEx as they are faster and, most of all, more reliable as well as with a tracking number to monitor the shipment.

What if I don't need court authenticated or sworn court-certified translations?

If you don't need sworn court-certified translations, you won't have to mail hard copies of your documents to our offices, making the process faster and easier. Whether you need simple or certified translations, we will work on the digital copies of your documents and email you your translations.

Which payment methods do you accept?

We accept international payments via wire transfer, credit card or PayPal.

What are revenue stamps? Are they mandatory?

Revenue stamps are mandatory for sworn court-certified translations. They are duty stamps that are part of the requirements as they are a tax charged on public documents. Simple or certified translations do not require revenue stamps.

Are your translations accepted by USCIS and Italian courts?

Yes. We have 25+ years of experience translating documents accepted by: USCIS, Italian consulates and courts, Universities and public offices in Italy and in the U.S. We guarantee compliance with legal standards.

What’s the difference between a certified and a sworn court-certified translation?

A certified translation includes a signed statement of accuracy (used for USCIS, U.S. schools, etc.). A sworn court-certified translation is signed before an Italian court and includes official seals and revenue stamps (required by Italian authorities). We provide both, depending on your needs.

Do I need an apostille?

If your document was issued in the U.S. and is being submitted to Italian authorities, it needs an apostille from the Secretary of State in the issuing state. We can help guide you through the process.

How much do translations cost?

The rate of a translation is based on: the amount of the text, the type of certification (simple, certified or sworn court-certified) and the file format (editable or not). Send us your document for a free, itemized quote with no obligation.

Which file formats do you accept?

We accept: editable files (DOC, DOCX, PDF with editable text), scans and images (PDF, JPEG, PNG), as long as they are clear and legible.

Can you help me figure out which kind of translation I need?

Absolutely. If you’re unsure, just email your document to [email protected] and tell us where it’s going. We’ll recommend the correct format (simple, certified, curt-certified, notarized.).

Certified, notarized and sworn translations: what’s the difference?

Sworn court-certified translation (for Italy)

This kind of translation includes a formal written statement in which the translator certifies under oath before an Italian court official that the translation is a complete and faithful representation of the original official record. The document bears the signatures of the court official, as well as the seal of the Italian court.

Certified translation (for the U.S.)

This kind of translation includes a Certificate of Translation Accuracy, in which the translator states that the translation is a complete and faithful representation of the original official record. The Certificate is numbered, dated and bears the translator's signatures, address and seal.

Notarized Certified Translation

In some cases, the Certificate of Translation Accuracy also needs to be notarized. This is when the translator who translated your record signs the Certificate of Translation Accuracy in front of a notary, who verifies the translator's identity.

What is an Apostille?

A Hague Convention apostille is a standardised certificate that authenticates the signature and seal of a document issued in the country of origin making it legal also in any other country that is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention. Since both Italy and the U.S. are parties to this Convention any U.S. issued official record needs an Apostille when it is submitted in Italy.

Please note
1) Most Italian consulates in the U.S. do not require Apostilles or naturalization documents to be translated while others require that all documents be translated into Italian. Please check with your consulate.
2) When applying at Italian municipalities or filing an appeal at the Court of Rome, all non-Italian documents must be translated.
