↪ Learn More About Visas for Italy
Whether you’re planning a short-term stay or making Tuscany your new home, our team of certified translators and bilingual relocation assistants can guide you through every step of the process. We will review your visa and immigration documents to ensure they meet all legal requirements, providing certified translations when necessary. Our goal is to make the visa approval process as easy as possible for you.
Short-term stays (less than 90 days)
If you are staying for less than 90 days, no visa is required for tourism, business, or study purposes. However, your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your planned stay. The upcoming ETIAS system will introduce additional requirements when it launches in late 2026, followed by a six-month grace period and we will ensure that you are fully prepared by then.
Long-term stays (over 90 days)
If you plan to stay more than 90 days, you must apply for a visa at your local Italian consulate at least three months in advance. Common requirements include a valid passport, proof of income, private health insurance for the Schengen Area, and proof of accommodation. We can help you prepare the supporting documents and translations required for your visa application, as well applying for the "Nulla Osta" (no impediment letter) required for work, family reunification, and investment visas.
Visa options we specialize in:
Student, family reunification, and elective residency
Work visas, including Blue Card and self-employed options (freelancer, digital nomad, startup)
Investment and medical treatment visas.

We guide you through applying for your “Permesso di Soggiorno” (residence permit) and getting your “Codice Fiscale” (similar to a SSN).
You can get your Codice Fiscale from your local Italian consulate or the Questura (immigration office) in the town or city where you are staying. It is required for many things in Italy, including renting an apartment, opening a bank account, setting up utilities, and applying for a residence permit.
After getting your Codice Fiscale, you must apply for your "Permesso di Soggiorno" (residence permit) within eight business days of your arrival. We can help you gather and translate your documents before you leave for Tuscany, as well as help you fill out the necessary forms.
A copy of each page of your passport and visa.
Your Italian Codice Fiscale and four passport-sized photos.
Proof of accommodation, such as a hotel booking confirmation, a letter from a host, a lease agreement, or a property deed.
Proof of financial means, such as bank statements, tax returns, or pay stubs.
Health insurance for the Schengen Area and any specific documents required for your visa type.
Completed post office kit, a 16.00 euro revenue stamp and the payment receipt for residence permit fees.
Within eight days of arriving in Italy with your visa, apply for the Permesso di Soggiorno (residence permit) by submitting the "yellow kit" at a post office.
On the day of your appointment, go to the local "Questura" (immigration office) to have your fingerprints taken and to bring your original documents. We can help you fill out the kit, gather your documents, and accompany you to the post office and the Questura. We will support you and assist you with the Italian language so that there are no language barriers.

ABOUT ITALY-AMERICA CERTIFIED LANGUAGE SERVICES
Your bilingual professional Italian and English translators and personal assistants for individuals, families, freelancers and retirees settling in Tuscany.
ACCURATE | LEGALLY COMPLIANT | CONFIDENTIAL

Hello, I’m Elena Nissen Villoresi, lead translator of Italy-America Certified Language Services.
I was born to an American mother and an Italian father and I was raised in both the US and Italy, giving me a deep connection to both countries. This bilingual, bicultural upbringing shaped not only who I am, but is also the foundation of my work today. I bring more than just fluency in two languages, I understand the mindset, systems, and everyday challenges on both sides of the Atlantic. My work is grounded in accuracy, empathy and cultural understanding.
25+ Years of Cross-Cultural Expertise
I began my professional journey in New York City, working as an interpreter, translator, and administrative professional at the Italian Chamber of Commerce, Cassa di Risparmio, and the Italian Trade Commission. After moving to Florence, I joined the American multinational company Richardson Electronics as bilingual executive assistant to the European CEO where I further specialized in corporate legal translation and cross-cultural communication.
Over the years, I have specialized in certified legal translations and served as a bilingual liaison and cultural bridge for clients navigating life between Italy and the U.S. Having crossed borders and adapted to new systems myself, I know firsthand what this means.

Over the years, I have built a trusted team of carefully selected bilingual English-Italian professionals who share my commitment to quality, confidentiality and cross-cultural sensitivity.
Each member of our team offers bilingual proficiency in both English and Italian and is deeply attuned to the nuances of working across two legal and cultural systems. Our collaborative approach enables us to handle projects of varying complexity with the same level of attention to detail and personalized care.
We are based in Florence, Italy, and work with clients across the globe, from the US and Canada to Europe and the Far East. You will work directly with me and with my carefully selected team without any middlemen or misunderstandings.

GUIDES
This section explains how official document translations, apostilles, and visa requirements work between Italy and the United States. The information is based on official guidelines from Italian and U.S. authorities and is provided to help you better understand these processes.
ACCURATE | LEGALLY COMPLIANT | CONFIDENTIAL

A sworn translation (traduzione giurata) includes a formal written statement in which the translator certifies, under oath before an Italian court official, that the translation is a complete and a faithful representation of the original official document. The sworn statement (verbale di giuramento) includes:
• The translator’s signature
• The court official’s signature
• The official seal of the relevant Italian court
A sworn court-certified translation for Italy is a bound set of documents with the required tax payments (revenue stamps) attached. It includes:1️⃣ The original document
Examples: birth certificate, marriage certificate, diploma, medical or legal record.
Italian courts accept only original documents.
2️⃣ The apostille.
U.S. documents must be apostilled by the issuing authority in the United States before they can be sworn in Italy.
An apostille confirms that the document is legally valid internationally. Apostilles include an issue date but do not expire.
3️⃣ The Italian translation.
Sworn translations are prepared by professional legal translators. The formatting matches the original document exactly, including stamps, seals, and handwritten notes.
4️⃣ The sworn certification.
This statement confirms the translation is accurate. It is signed by the translator and sworn before an Italian court official, who applies the official seal.
Sworn translations are required for:
• Italian visa applications
• Residency permits
• Italian government offices
• Italian universities (transcripts and diplomas)
• Legal matters (birth and marriage certificates, divorce decrees, death cetificates, adoption papers, tax returns, real estate transactions, business agreements)
We swear to the accuracy and completeness of every translation before the Court of Florence. Our sworn translations are officially accepted by Italian consulates worldwide, Italian universities, public offices, and businesses throughout Italy.
A certified translation for the United States includes a Certificate of Translation Accuracy (affidavit), in which the translator states that the translation is complete and accurate.
The certificate is dated and signed by the translator and includes their contact information.
U.S. authorities (including USCIS) do not require usually notarization unless it is specifically requested.
According to the Code of Federal Regulations (8 CFR 103.2(b)(3)), any document in a foreign language submitted to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) must be accompanied by a complete and accurate English translation certified by the translator, who must also certify his or her competence to translate from the foreign language into English.
1️⃣ The Italian record (birth certificates, degrees, transcripts, etc.).
U.S. institutions generally do not require physical originals. High-quality digital copies (PDF or JPEG) are usually acceptable. However, requirements vary, so we recommend asking the specific institution whether a digital copy is acceptable or if the original document is required.2️⃣ The English translation
The translation must be an accurate and complete word-for-word rendition of the original document. Our translations preserve the layout and all details, including seals, stamps, signatures, and handwritten notes.3️⃣ The Certificate of Accuracy
It is required by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and by most academic institutions. This certificate includes:
• Translator’s signature
• Full name and address
• Date
• Statement confirming translation competence.Notarization is generally not required unless specifically requested.
Certified translations are required for:
• USCIS submissions
• Other U.S. government agencies
• Academic institutions (transcripts and diplomas)
• Legal matters (birth certificates, marriage certificates, business agreements)
Foreign official documents submitted to an Italian Embassy or Consulate that are not in Italian must be translated into Italian. The translation must be authenticated by an Italian Consular Officer in order to be accepted by Italian authorities. To have a translation authenticated by the Italian Consulate you often need to submit (usually by mail) the following:1️⃣ the original document with its Apostille
2️⃣ the translation of the document
3️⃣ a money order to cover consular fees
4️⃣ a pre-paid and pre-addressed envelope for the return of the certified document;Documents issued in the U.S. or in another country that is a member of the 1961 Hague Convention also require an apostille. Most Consulate do not need the Apostille to be translated into Italian.Always check with the Italian consulate of your juristiction which are their requirements since the vary from Italian consulate to Italian consulate.
In some cases, a certified translation must also be notarized. This occurs when the translator signs the Certificate of Translation Accuracy in front of a notary public, who verifies the translator’s identity.
Notarization authenticates the signature, not the accuracy of the translation itself.
A Hague Convention apostille is a standardized certificate that authenticates the signature and seal on a public document issued in a country, allowing it to be legally recognized in another country that is a member of the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention.Because both Italy and the United States are members of the Convention, U.S.-issued public documents require an apostille when submitted to Italian authorities. Please Note
• Most Italian consulates in the U.S. do not require apostilles or naturalization documents to be translated. However, some require all documents to be translated into Italian. Always verify requirements with your specific consulate.
• When submitting documents at Italian municipalities (comuni) or filing appeals before Italian courts (including the Court of Rome), all non-Italian documents must be translated into Italian and require sworn translations or the Italian Consulate authentication.
